Frequently Asked Questions
What can I expect in a first session?
Our first session is a chance for us to get to know each other and see how it feels to work together. I’ll ask about what’s bringing you in, what’s been feeling hard, and what you’re hoping for. You’re welcome to share as much or as little as feels right. My goal is to create a space where you feel grounded, not overwhelmed, and where we can start building a real, collaborative connection.
How do I know if I’m ready to begin therapy?
Therapy isn’t a magic fix - it takes time, emotional energy, and some financial investment. You might be ready if you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected, or simply curious about understanding yourself more deeply. I usually encourage new clients to start with weekly sessions for the first 6–8 weeks so we can build momentum, but we can talk together about what feels doable.
Do you offer a free consultation?
Yes. I offer a free 20-minute phone or video consultation so we can meet, talk through what you’re looking for, and see if it feels like a good fit. Therapy is a big investment and you deserve to feel comfortable with the person you’re working with.
Do you accept insurance?
I don’t accept insurance, but I can provide a monthly superbill for out-of-network reimbursement. You’re also welcome to use an HSA or FSA card for services. I typically don’t provide diagnosis codes on forms unless requested.
What are your fees?
For detailed information about costs and session lengths, please refer to my Services page. I approach therapy as an investment in your well-being, and I’m always happy to talk openly about what feels manageable for you.
What forms of payment do you accept?
All payments are processed through SimplePractice, a secure HIPAA-compliant system. Credit card payments are handled through Stripe and will appear as Cairn Wellness & Counseling (my supervisor’s practice) on your statement. Cards are charged automatically after each session (and for no-shows or late cancellations) so you don’t have to worry about payment during our time together.
Can I switch my appointment to telehealth?
Absolutely. Telehealth is always available for clients located in Missouri, and it’s a great option if something comes up or getting to the office feels stressful. If you’re outside Missouri, I can offer therapeutic coaching, which is different from therapy but still supportive and structured.
What are your office hours?
I have limited daytime availability on Mondays and in the evenings Tuesday through Thursday.
What is your cancellation policy?
Life happens, and advance notice is always appreciated. Appointments must be canceled at least 24 hours in advance; otherwise, the full session fee is charged. This helps me hold consistent time for you and for all clients.
